  • Be sure to leave the barbecue outside. When you fire up the grill, it can release toxic chemicals like carbon monoxide. Be sure that you use your barbecue outside so that you have enough ventilation.
  • Keep your grill away from anything flammable. If necessary, move it so that it’s at least ten feet away from your home, patio furniture, or low hanging branches. That way, you’ll reduce your risk of starting a house fire.
  • Be wary of fat drippings. As you cook meats on your barbecue, they drip fat that builds up. Without frequent cleaning, this fat can lead to a grease fire. Be sure to clean your grill before you start grilling.
  • Open the lid before you turn on the gas. If you use a gas barbecue, take extra precautions. Open the lid before you turn on the gas. If you leave it closed, the gas builds up. If you then light the grill, the gas builds up explodes. Be very careful when using a gas barbecue!
  • Never leave your grill unattended. Barbecuing is a more dangerous form of cooking, and a fire could break out at any moment. Keep an eye on the grill so that you can manage any issues before they get out of hand.
